Benefits Offered by Installing Soft Close Cabinet Hinges

Oct 21st 2026

Few home upgrades are as quick to notice as soft close cabinet hinges. One day the kitchen is full of banging doors, and the next every cabinet glides gently shut on its own. Soft close hinges are not just a luxury feature for new kitchens, either. They are affordable, they fit most modern cabinets, and they can be added during a remodel or as a simple weekend upgrade.

In this guide we explain how soft close cabinet hinges work, the real benefits they offer, which hinge type suits your cabinets, and how to install them for a smooth, quiet result. We also look at soft close drawer slides, so your drawers can match your doors.

How Soft Close Cabinet Hinges Work

A soft close hinge looks much like a standard concealed hinge, but it has a small damper built into the hinge. When you push a cabinet door closed, the hinge lets the door swing freely for most of its travel. In the last few inches, the damper takes over and slows the door down, then gently pulls it closed against the cabinet.

The result is a door that closes the same way every time, whether someone pushes it softly or gives it a hard shove. There is no bang, no bounce and no door left slightly open.

Most soft close hinges for kitchen and bathroom cabinets are concealed European-style hinges. The hinge cup fits into a 35mm hole drilled in the back of the door, and the arm connects to a mounting plate inside the cabinet. Because everything sits inside the cabinet, the hinge is hidden when the door is closed.

The Top Benefits of Soft Close Cabinet Hinges

1. A quieter, calmer home

The most obvious benefit is noise. Cabinet doors get opened and closed many times a day, and every slam echoes through an open-plan kitchen. Soft close hinges remove that noise completely. Early-morning breakfasts, late-night snacks and busy family dinners all get quieter, which is especially welcome in homes with sleeping babies, shift workers or thin walls.

2. Less wear on doors, frames and finishes

Every slam sends a jolt through the door, the cabinet box and the hinge itself. Over time that impact can loosen screws, chip paint and lacquer, and wear down the edges where the door meets the frame. Soft close hinges reduce that impact, which helps your cabinets keep looking good and working properly for longer.

3. Safer for little fingers

Fast-closing cabinet doors can pinch fingers, and children are often the ones who get caught. Because a soft close hinge slows the door in the final part of its swing, it greatly reduces the chance of a painful pinch. It is a small change that makes the kitchen and bathroom more family-friendly.

4. Contents stay where you put them

When a door slams, everything inside feels it. Glasses clink, spice jars tip over and stacked plates shift. With a gentle close, the contents of your cabinets stay neatly in place, and fragile items such as glassware are less likely to be knocked around.

5. Doors that close fully every time

Regular hinges sometimes leave a door slightly open, especially if someone closes it in a hurry. Soft close hinges pull the door the final distance on their own, so cabinets look tidy and stay closed. That also keeps dust and kitchen grease out of the cabinet.

6. A premium feel at a modest price

Soft close hardware is one of those details that makes a kitchen feel high-end. The good news is that the upgrade costs far less than new cabinets. In many kitchens you can keep your existing doors and simply swap in soft close hinges of the right type.

Where Soft Close Hinges Make the Biggest Difference

Kitchens get most of the attention, but soft close hinges improve any cabinet that is used often. Here are the rooms where homeowners notice the change most:

  • Kitchens: the busiest cabinets in the home, opened and closed many times every day by every member of the family.
  • Bathroom vanities: early-morning routines are much calmer without doors banging while the rest of the house sleeps.
  • Children's rooms and playrooms: slower closing doors protect small fingers and stand up better to enthusiastic use.
  • Laundry rooms: cabinets here are often opened with full hands, so a door that closes itself gently is a real help.
  • Home offices and media units: quiet doors keep video calls and movie nights free of sudden bangs.
  • Wardrobes and closets: tall, heavy doors benefit from a controlled close that protects the hinges and the frame.
  • Garage and workshop cabinets: a soft close keeps tools and supplies from shifting every time a door swings shut.

If you are planning a remodel, it is worth choosing soft close hinges for every cabinet at once. That way all the doors in the room look and feel the same, and you only need to buy and learn one type of hinge.

Types of Soft Close Hinges

Choosing the right soft close hinge starts with knowing what kind of cabinet you have. The two main styles are frameless and face frame cabinets.

Frameless (European) cabinets

Frameless cabinets have no front frame around the opening. The door attaches directly to the side panel of the cabinet box using concealed European hinges and mounting plates. Our soft close nickel European 105° hinges are a popular choice here. They are sold in pairs with clip-on mounting plates and screws, offer easy 2-way adjustment, and come in full overlay, half overlay and inset versions.

If you need the door to open wider, for example to pull out trays or reach into a corner cabinet, a wide-angle hinge is the answer. Our 165° soft close clip-on hinge fits a 35mm cup and can replace just about any standard European hinge.

Face frame cabinets

Face frame cabinets have a solid wood frame around the front opening, which is common in many American kitchens. These cabinets need compact face frame hinges that mount to the frame rather than the side panel. Our soft close 3/4" overlay face frame hinges use a 35mm cup, open to 105° and have 3-way adjustment for fast installation. We also stock a 1-3/8" overlay version for doors that cover more of the frame.

Short arm hinges

Short arm soft close hinges are a compact option for cupboards, wardrobes and bookcases. They come with a mounting bracket already attached and are available in full overlay, half overlay and inset versions.

How to Choose the Right Soft Close Hinge

Once you know your cabinet style, check these details before you order.

  • Overlay: how much of the cabinet the closed door covers. Full overlay doors cover the side panel or frame almost completely, half overlay doors share a panel with a neighboring door, and inset doors sit inside the opening, flush with the cabinet front.
  • Cup size: most concealed hinges use a 35mm cup. Measure the existing hole in the back of your door to confirm.
  • Door thickness: many of our European hinges are designed for doors from 14 to 20mm thick.
  • Bore distance: the distance from the edge of the cup hole to the edge of the door. Our European hinges accept a range of 3 to 7mm, which also sets the gap, or reveal, between the door and the cabinet.
  • Opening angle: 105° to 110° suits most doors, while 165° gives full access to deep or corner cabinets.
  • Number of hinges: taller and heavier doors need more hinges. Two is typical for standard wall and base cabinet doors, with extra hinges for tall pantry doors.

Installation Tips for a Smooth, Quiet Close

Swapping standard concealed hinges for soft close versions is usually straightforward, especially when the cup size and overlay stay the same.

  1. Take one door at a time. Remove the door, note which way the old hinges are mounted and keep the screws organized.
  2. Replace hinges and plates together. When replacing European hinges, it is best to replace both hinges and both mounting plates on the door. Mixing different brands and types can cause the door to bind.
  3. Fit the hinge cups. Press each cup into the 35mm hole on the back of the door and fasten it with the screws.
  4. Attach the plates and hang the door. Fix the mounting plates inside the cabinet, then clip or screw the hinge arms onto the plates.
  5. Adjust the fit. Use the adjustment screws to line up the door side to side, in and out and, on 3-way hinges, up and down, until the gaps are even.
  6. Test the close. Push the door closed both gently and firmly. It should slow down and close fully every time.

If a door still bangs, check that the hinge is fully clipped onto its plate and that the door is not catching on the frame or a neighboring door.

Soft Close vs. Push-to-Open Cabinets

Some modern kitchens use handle-free doors that open with a light push. If you like that look, a soft close cabinet door opener lets a door pop open with a gentle push and then pulls it softly closed again. Note that this device must be used with free-swinging hinges that have no spring and no soft close feature, so it replaces soft close hinges rather than working alongside them.

Don't Forget the Drawers

Once your doors close quietly, a slamming drawer will stand out even more. Soft close drawer slides work in the same way as soft close hinges. They let the drawer glide freely, then catch it near the end of its travel and pull it gently shut. Full extension slides also let you open the drawer all the way, so you can reach everything at the back.

Our undermount soft close slides sit hidden beneath the drawer for a clean look, while our side-mount soft close ball bearing slides are a sturdy choice for heavier drawers.

Signs Your Cabinets Are Ready for a Soft Close Upgrade

You do not need a full remodel to enjoy soft close hardware. Consider upgrading if your doors bang shut, drift open, sag or squeak, or if your hinges are worn, rusty or painted over. Our guide to the signs it is time for new cabinet hinges explains what to look for and when a simple adjustment is enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add soft close hinges to my existing cabinets?

Yes, in most cases. If your cabinets already use concealed hinges with a 35mm cup, you can usually swap in soft close hinges of the same type and overlay without drilling new holes.

Do soft close hinges work on face frame cabinets?

Yes. Choose soft close face frame compact hinges that match your door overlay, such as 3/4" or 1-3/8".

How long do soft close hinges last?

Quality soft close hinges are built for years of daily use. Keeping them properly adjusted and the screws tight helps them last as long as possible.

Why does my soft close door still slam?

The most common causes are a hinge that is not fully clipped onto its mounting plate, a door rubbing on the frame, or a mix of soft close and standard hinges on the same door. Check each hinge and make sure both hinges on the door are the same type.

Are soft close hinges worth it in a bathroom or laundry room?

Absolutely. Any cabinet that gets used every day benefits from a quieter, gentler close, and the same hinges work in bathrooms, laundry rooms, garages and closets.

Do soft close hinges need any maintenance?

Very little. Check the screws once or twice a year and tighten any that have worked loose, wipe away dust and kitchen grease from the hinge, and re-adjust the door if the gaps start to look uneven. Avoid painting over the hinge, because paint can stop the damper and pivot points from moving freely.
